Practical notes for independent studio workflows

Releasing music is no longer the hard part — releasing it well is. Bad metadata, low-res artwork, or missing lyrics can kill momentum before it starts.

Here’s the exact workflow I use for every release.

Table of Contents

1. Choosing a Distributor

DistroKid is my current favorite for most independent artists — unlimited uploads, fast delivery, good analytics, and reasonable pricing. TuneCore and CD Baby are also solid. I avoid the cheapest no-name distributors because support and reliability matter when something goes wrong.

2. Metadata Best Practices

Use consistent artist name spelling everywhere. Fill in ISRCs, UPCs, composer credits, and lyrics. Use proper genre tags. Tools like MusicBrainz Picard or Tag&Rename help batch-edit files before upload. Incorrect metadata is one of the fastest ways to get your release flagged or buried.

3. Artwork & Visual Assets

Always deliver 3000x3000px minimum at 300dpi. I create multiple versions (square, story, banner) using Canva Pro or Adobe Express. Consistent visual identity across platforms dramatically improves recognition and click-through rates.

Frequently Asked Questions

How important is metadata really?
Extremely. Streaming platforms use it for search, recommendations, and rights management. Bad metadata can mean your song doesn’t appear in searches or gets credited to the wrong artist.
Should I use DistroKid or TuneCore?
DistroKid for most independent artists who release frequently. TuneCore if you want more traditional “label-like” services and are okay paying per release.

Treat every release like a professional product. Good metadata and visuals don’t cost much but dramatically improve how your music is discovered and perceived.
