Design one rig that delivers both pristine studio productions and consistent, powerful live tones without compromise.

The dream is simple: record a killer tone in the studio and then take that exact sound (or a very close live approximation) onto the stage without rebuilding everything.
Hybrid rigs using modern modelers + selective analog pedals have made this more achievable than ever.
The Neural DSP Quad Cortex is currently my top recommendation for most players. It has excellent amp and cab modeling, a powerful effects engine, and a true effects loop that makes 4CM easy. The Line 6 Helix and Fractal FM9 are also outstanding depending on your preferred workflow and budget.
Run your guitar into the modeler’s input (or a transparent preamp), then send the preamp signal out to your analog pedals (overdrives, modulation, etc.), then return into the modeler’s loop return before the power amp/cab simulation. This gives you the best of both worlds: analog dirt and modulation in front of digital amp modeling.
For live I use full-range flat-response (FRFR) speakers like the Headrush MX5 or Atomic CLR. I keep the modeler’s cab sims on for FOH and turn them off (or use a different preset) for the stage monitor mix so the guitarist hears a more natural amp-in-the-room feel.
A well-designed hybrid rig gives you the best of both worlds: the flexibility and recall of digital modeling with the tactile, organic response of your favorite analog pedals. The Quad Cortex + 4CM approach is currently the sweet spot for most players.
